Another Year & A Lonely Street Of Dreams

Another Year & A Lonely Street Of Dreams

The tune came over the car radio.  As it happens to be a favorite of mine I commented to my wife that the lyric line about walking alone is always true.  She replied that one need not always be lonely.

I think the human condition is inherently lonely.  No matter the condition of material well being, of affluence and even a few good friendships, there is always a part of one’s self that remains concealed, hidden.  As I observe myself, attempting a daily dialog, even writing to the best of my ability searching for my true voice — so far I am unsatisfied.  I feel the presence of something, things that I’ve not been able to touch.

I travel on.  So far, a stranger to myself, in some respects.  What do I know?  What do I desire?  Sometimes I think that I know.  And then I am not sure.

This tune was released in 1987.  I love the intro, the luscious, fat keyboard runs, and then the singers triumphant, undefeated confession, that yes he is a drifter, destined to walk alone, seeking for love’s fulfillment.  The video images speak with a sharp edged display of sensual affluence.  The image of the attractive female dancing on the front end of three, lined-up Benz automobiles speaks of the epitome of affluence in the West.  ‘Street-of-dreams,’ indeed.  It is obvious that David Coverdale the lead guitarist loved every minute of this video.

Yet, there is a fly in the ointment.  At the end of the day when you’ve experienced all the pleasure that life may afford, you may ask, “Is that all there is?”  There is an issue of greater social import.  What kind of person is produced by a society with single minded dedication to pleasure, to individuals amassing piles of money?

This tune introduced in 1987 was a harbinger of our own 21st Century.  As Nietzsche said:

Lightning and thunder require time, the light of the stars requires time, deeds require time even after they are done, before they can be seen and heard.

Excerpt, The Gay Science by Nietzsche

Here I Go Again

By Whitesnake

I don’t know where I’m going
But I sure know where I’ve been
Hanging on the promises
In songs of yesterday

And I’ve made up my mind
I ain’t wasting no more time

Here I go again
Here I go again

Though I keep searching for an answer
I never seem to find what I’m looking for
Oh, Lord, I pray
You give me strength to carry on

‘Cause I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams

Here I go again on my own
Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known
Like a hobo I was born to walk alone

But I’ve made up my mind
I ain’t wasting no more time

Just another heart in need of rescue
Waiting on love’s sweet charity
I am gonna hold on
For the rest of my days

‘Cause I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams

Here I go again on my own
Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
And I’ve made up my mind
I ain’t wasting no more time

But here I go again
Here I go again
Here I go again

Here I go

And I’ve made up my mind
I ain’t wasting no more time

Here I go again on my own
Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
‘Cause I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams

Here I go again on my own
Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
I have made up my mind
I ain’t wasting no more time

But here I go again
Here I go again
Here I go again
Here I go
Here I go again
