Another Year To Wake Up
A twelve month segment of time. Time. a human made measure. Homo sapiens, aware of the 2nd law of thermodynamics, that everything processes toward dispersion of energy, dissipation of life-force if you will — so we measure. I wonder if we are the only mammal that consciously measures? What is twelve months by comparison to the estimated life span of the earth? 4.5 billion years or so, give or take… Twelve months is nothing more than a glint in “god’s eye.” According to evidence found in Africa, we’ve been around for 300,000 years, relative newcomers to the party… I once read:
In a full ‘main feature film’ recapitulating faithfully the complete history of the universe, the rise of human beings from the first beginnings of man to the achievements of the 20th century would flash by in a single second – M. Polanyi
Nevertheless I anticipate what remains to be done in the year ahead. Always work is to be done. The cost of existence is the expenditure of energy. Think about it as you would a lease agreement.
On New Year’s Eve we viewed The Matrix Resurrections by Lana Wachowski. There are many remarkable things about this film. This is the fourth in the series of movies relating in parabolic form, humanities fall-into-civilization. Its a Sci-fi, fantasy film conceived to ignite the imagination. The story of the fourth edition, Matrix Resurrections portrays the dilemma of a male in his late middle years, successful by superficial standards, who feels existentially lost, disconnected from a past that he vaguely understands. He is presented once again with a defining choice, ingest the blue pill, as often as needed and everything remains unchanged. That is: a comfortable life, affluent, obedient to his employers demands that he exert himself to add to their wealth, etc. Or he can take the red pill, waking to the unlimited violence applied to maintain the illusion of a civilized city, and waking to the possibility of reclaiming a long lost love which he barely remembers. He knows that once awake, fate entails that he join the war to regain freedom that has been “lost.” If you recall the first Matrix movie, I am sure that you recognize that I am referring to Neo and Trinity.
There is a lot going on in this cinematic tale. Twenty two years have passed since the first Matrix in 1999. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are brought back to play starring roles in Resurrections. I felt some confusion following the plot line but the ideas offered for contemplation made this a film worth patiently viewing.
There is much work left to be done. The guardians of the status-quo will exert any level of force necessary to retain a system that supports their wealth and power. How can one not take the red pill, to join the fight for a more just and free world? Take the red pill and learn how deep the rabbit-hole goes…
I am reminded of this when I contemplate my grand daughter of 22 months who works to master the rudiments of vocabulary and the syntax of English grammar.
