Drunken Joy To Look Away
One more nationwide demonstration is under my belt. I joined the Hands Off event in Geneva, standing on State Street, with a few thousand of my neighbors, frightened and concerned Americans. Trump, naturally, after announcing the imposition of massive tariffs, flew away to his Trump National Doral Golf Club to host the LIV tournament. All the while, the rest of the country reacts to the impending trauma, (business closings, layoffs, rising food prices) that are entailed by the tariffs.
Trump enjoys bringing pain… He believes that no one should suffer alone. Pain necessarily is to be wide-spread for things to get done. Conflict is welcomed, treating former allies as enemies, upends all that was settled, agreed upon.
I joined hundreds of thousands of fellow Americans to resist this grim assessment of life, of world. Trump is an eccentric abuser, deeply unhappy with this world, with himself. Like conservative evangelicals who support him he pines for a remaking of the world, and fantasizes a “better” other-world. He sets upon destroying this world, like a suffering and tortured God.
Once upon a time,
Zarathustra also cast his fancy beyond man,
like all believers in an other-world. (Hinterweltler)
The work of a suffering and tortured God,
the world then seemed to me.
The dream and fiction of a god,
the world then seemed to me;
colored smoke before the eyes of a discontented god.
Good and evil, and joy and pain, and I and you
– colored smoke did they seem to me
before creative eyes.
The creator
wished to look away from himself;
so he created the world.
Drunken joy it is for the sufferer
to look away from his suffering
and forget himself.
Drunken joy and self-forgetting,
did the world
once seem
to me.
This world, eternally imperfect,
image of an eternal contradiction
and imperfect image
– a drunken joy to its imperfect creator:
thus did the world once seem to me.
Thus did I also once cast my delusion beyond man,
like all the believers in an other-world.
Beyond man, indeed?
Ah, you brothers, that god whom I created
was man-made and madness,
like all gods!
Human was he,
and only a poor fragment of a human and ego.
Out of my own ashes and glow
it came to me, that phantom.
And truly,
it came not to me
from the beyond!

A new will I teach to men:
to choose that path
which man has followed blindly,
and to approve of it
– and no longer to slink aside from it,
Like the sick and dying!
The sick and dying
– it was they who despised the body and the earth,
and invented the heavenly world,
and the redeeming drops of blood;
but even those sweet and dismal poisons
they borrowed
from the body
and the earth!
Thus Spake Zarathustra, by Friedrich Nietzsche, trans. by Thomas Common, Otherworldsmen no. 3

We humans seem to anthropomorphize just about everything we can, including our deities. We make the world and everything in it a reflection of ourselves. Narcissism abounds and in that narcissism we believe ourselves to be the center of the universe. As if, in our omnipotence, we will live forever and all will be well whether it be here on earth or in some mythical realm of heaven. Is it remotely possible that our subjective nature will ever allow us to view actual reality and to understand our personal responsibility for taking care of our one and only home? Probably not!
Probably not! and Maybe!
We are Narcissus, in love with our own image, and beating ourselves purple because we cannot have what we want. (After all it’s just an image) And still Narcissus is a hunter. Is it not possible for humankind to awaken, to finally recognize that what we are, a magnificent dimension of nature — is enough?
Of course there is always a chance. If it was utterly hopeless I would have buried my head in the sand and turned a blind eye to what is going on. Unfortunately there are days when it feels like the chance we have of suddenly waking up is much like that proverbial snowball in hell.
IF TARIFFS ARE SO BAD WHY DOES ALMOST EVERY OTHER COUNTRY HAVE THEM?
Can’t you see that Trump is using tariffs to eliminate all tariffs? That would bring about free trade, and free trade would be good.
Yes, the markets go up and down as they always have, nothing new here, and since when did folks like you ever worry about people like me who are taking it on the chine with big losses? 10% of Americans own 88% of equities, the next 40% owns 12% of equities, the bottom 50% has debt. They have credit card bills, they rent their homes, they have auto loans, and they need some relief. What we have been doing about free trade hasn’t been working, so now Trump is doing something that is going to do something about it, and you are out protesting against Trump thinking you are going to accomplish something, just what good are you doing for the 50%?
Remember in Trumps last term when he raised tariffs on China? well when Biden got in office, he didn’t get rid of them, why not?
But hey, what is happening now? very good things to my way of thinking. Again, Trump is trying to tariff so we can eliminate tariffs. Trump is trying to level the playing field, and it’s starting to work. Thailand and Cambodia and Argentina and Vietnam and Israel and Italy and apparently 50 other countries and the European Union are now coming back to the table. Why on earth would you want to be against that?
Gary
Gary nearly every other country employs value added tax which is not a tariff. Google VAT. A majority of nations use this method and we do not. They are not going to change though Trump desires to bludgeon everyone into submission. You resist recognizing the bully that he always has been.
