Duino Elegies–Ranier Maria Rilke

Elegy for Charlie

Elegy for Charlie

Superficially this is a love song.  By chance it was offered by the playlist here at Starbucks at the time I was contemplating what to say about Charlie Gard.  The tune is far from pop entertainment.  To my ear it enters at an existential level, speaking to the essential need for human connection.  Our connectedness to one another is as precious, as necessary as is food and water.  As a statement of faith, I would extend that need for communion to the earth, to all of Nature.

I felt the haunting bass note, the heartbeat of the universe as I like to think of it.  And the plaintive appeal of the singers voice.  The gritty scene, and the individuals of many different histories and places.

Charlie will be missed.  As will we all.  Let’s hold on to one another.
