Hangover

I am sure that you’ve had one.  Awaking with the agenda of a new day on your mind, and just feeling out of sorts, like there is a “disturbance in the force” of your world.  That is how it was for me this morning as I found a gap in traffic on Midlothian road.  I had forty five minutes ahead of me to reach Zion for my work assignment.

I knew the source of my disconnect.  Our philosophy group discussion last night, which was ostensibly on the topic of developing self awareness as a consumer in a capitalist system–reached a point of disagreement.  The disagreement was on the matter of social services, on the expenditure of tax money for programs to assist/support disabled, poor, drug addicted, the abandoned, etc. within society.  There was vociferous, spirited exchange of views in the group.  Some of us wanted this cut out entirely, leaving charity up to voluntary actions, the free will of the individual citizen.  Others of us, myself included, were loathe to see sick and malnourished people dying in public, or dying privately from destitution.  The disagreement was heated.

That is what I had on my mind when I woke this morning.  So is this the direction that we are taking, the road that we are on?

In front of me was a big late model Chevy Dualie truck, seeming as wide as a small house taking up the lane, four rear-drive wheels spinning.  A tiny, tattered American flag whipped in the wind from the antenna on the front fender.  I was surprised to find myself next to the vehicle at the stoplight.  I managed to get this photo.

Is this all of us, barreling down the road to nowhere, our big diesel smoking, our flag flying…………….?
