EVERY ANGEL IS TERRIFYING

EVERY ANGEL IS TERRIFYING

Duino Elegies–Ranier Maria Rilke

Heidegger

Scientific existence
possesses its simplicity and aptness
in that it relates to beings themselves
in a distinctive way and only to them.

Science would like to dismiss the nothing
with a lordly wave of the hand.
                            –*–
Only when the strangeness of beings oppresses us
does it arouse and evoke wonder.
Only on the ground of wonder—the revelation of the nothing –does the “why?” loom before us.

—excerpt, What Is Metaphysics?
by Martin Heidegger

*Yes, I posted this quote a few weeks ago.  I’m still thinking about it.  Some words deserve a lot of thought.
