Is It Too Much To Ask?

Is It Too Much To Ask?

Monday, the workday is pleasant, seventy degrees or so.  I am thankful for the common grace of an exquisite balance of sunlight, rainfall, and Nature’s denouement of new life.  A few days ago I installed a statue of a rabbit in our backyard, a memorial to the fecundity of Nature.

This tune approaches perfection.  What is best said out loud is the enduring question directed at our fellowman/women:  What is necessary and sufficient for each and everyone of us to be human?  I know it’s the abstract version of the question.  Lucinda Williams conceives the question in a down to earth, concrete mode.  Comfortable bed, warm clothes, food, and the pinnacle desideratum of human well being: freedom and ability to create beauty and meaning.  Beauty and meaning is short hand for “a full house and a rock and roll band.”  And one more thing — love!

You simply must experience this video of a 2007 performance of Passionate Kisses by Lucinda Williams.

Passionate Kisses

By Lucinda Williams

Is it too much to ask
I want a comfortable bed that won’t hurt my back
Food to fill me up
And warm clothes and all that stuff
Shouldn’t I have this
Shouldn’t I have this
Shouldn’t I have all of this, and

Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh
Passionate kisses from you

Is it too much to demand
I want a full house and a rock and roll band
Pens that won’t run out of ink
And cool quiet and time to think
Shouldn’t I have this
Shouldn’t I have this
Shouldn’t I have all of this, and

Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh
Passionate kisses from you

Do I want too much
Am I going overboard to want that touch
I shout it out to the night
“Give me what I deserve, ’cause it’s my right”
Shouldn’t I have this (shouldn’t I)
Shouldn’t I have this (shouldn’t I)
Shouldn’t I have all of this, and

Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh
Passionate kisses from you
Passionate kisses
Passionate kisses, whoa oh oh
Passionate kisses from you
