Plague Journal, Roadtrip

In several hours we will leave Illinois for St. Joseph, Michigan.  The drive will take us around the big lake, (Lake Michigan) to the resort town in the adjoining state.  I love a road trip, the change of scene which travel affords.  The geographical change enables a reboot of the psyche, to shift the axis of mind, to cleanse the debris of anomalous stuff that just does not fit within the framework of a sane reality.  There’s been an over abundance of such detritus lately.  I could offer a short list.  The image that sits atop the pile is of Vice President Pence going on and on about how well we as a nation have done in dealing with the corona virus, how the death rates are falling….  It was a surreal press conference of several days ago. Today, Friday morning the NYT reported,

‘More than 800 have died in each of the last three days — a three-day total that’s 56 percent higher than during the same three days last week.’

It will be good to “get away,” to spend leisure time with family members.

I offer this tune for your enjoyment, and contemplation.  The lyric-smith is John Fogerty.  A few years ago I heard John Fogerty in live performance at Summerfest in Milwaukee.  Some of his songs are “standards” of Rock n Roll for my generation.  On stage I could see that he is a humble human being.  Humility is a quality that is rare.  Fogerty seemed to be the kind of guy that you’d enjoy spending time with over breakfast at a local diner.

Mystic Highway

By John Fogerty

Lately I begin to wonder,
How’s it all gonna end.
After all the flash and thunder,
Then it’s gone with the wind.

All the stars in the heavens,
They been there to light my way.
Without knowin’ where I’m going,
Probably get there anyway.

Mystic highway that I’m on
Ooh ooh, take me home
Mystic highway that I ramble
Ooh ooh take me home.

This old road has been my lifeline,
My companion and my friend.
Like a rope around the universe,
Ain’t no beginning, ain’t no end.

Out across the constellations,
There’s a place behind the sun.
Everything is connected,
Everything and everyone.

Mystic highway that I’m on
Ooh ooh, take me home
Mystic highway that I ramble
Ooh ooh take me home.

Down by the river on Saturday night,
Everybody waiting for a good time.
Smooth city slickers and loaded dice,
Take your money in a pig’s eye.
Rain gonna fall, sun gonna shine,
Ain’t no worry in my mind.
Big wheel rollin’ cross the sky,
Ain’t no worry in my mind.

All the stars that I’m under,
Know the way I feel tonight.
All the miles I’ve been travellin’
Headin’ back to the light.

Mystic highway that I’m on
Ooh ooh, take me home
Mystic highway that I ramble
Ooh ooh take me home
Ooh ooh take me home.
Yeah!
