Pumpkins

Pumpkins

Fall harvest season is here.  Apple picking, visits to a local farm for selecting pumpkins are parts of the ritual that marks this season of the year.  The air is chilly.  One does the remaining out of doors chores with awareness that soon the frost and then the snow will signal a season of hibernation for many of the wild animals.  It is a time of preparation for winters rest.

Yesterday we were invited to participate with our grandchildren’s family in a session of pumpkin carving.  Properly carving a pumpkin is demanding work.  The gords have a thick wall that resists effort with a sharp knife to cut an opening from the top into the center of the vegetable.  Next the pulp and seeds must be scooped from the center in preparation for the design-planning of the face.  Creating a more interesting face than one’s siblings is the challenge of the family pumpkin carving.

These photos show the result of a late afternoon’s work.  Dad and mom joined in as well.  You can also paint a pumpkin.  The Salvador Dali-esque work was created by Lincoln.  The study in blue by Violet.
