I always write first thing in the morning.  My mind works best then.  If I can lay some good words down, doing my best,  I face the rest of the day with a “can do” attitude.

I did not show up this morning, because Mother Nature kicked my ass.  I suffered through the night with abdominal cramps, fever.  I kept company with the toilet on three occasions.  That was a long night.  I am feeling better, at least strong enough to write this.

I intended to write about war. I thought about comparing the famous Christmas day truce between the Allied soldiers and those in the opposite fortifications who fought for the Kaiser; how they made peace for a few hours in December of 1914.   I thought to draw a comparison with soldiers of a more modern war, the Waffen SS , who fought for the Fuhrer in the 1930s.  Almost certainly they were the sons of the fathers who manned the guns in the trenches of WWI.

That story will have to wait.  It is just too heavy, too dark with portent for our own time.  I need a song, to hold on to.

Well here it is.  I offer this not as an excursion into romantic escape.  The lyric line, and the heart beat of the base line are just as true of human nature as our ability to kill without mercy.  Let’s think about it!
