Rhythm And Flow
The greater part of human activity
is designed to make permanent
those experiences and joys
which are only lovable because
they are changing.
Music is a delight
because of its rhythm and flow.
Yet the moment you arrest
the flow
and prolong a note or a chord
beyond its time,
the rhythm
is destroyed.
-Alan Watts
We have greatly enjoyed the past two days here in Traverse City, Michigan. A first visit to the area, our time has been filled with discovery. Learning, then choosing what to see and experience. Taking a risk upon the unknown. Internet searches provide enough information so that choices are not entirely blind.
A reservation was made at Artisan, a restaurant not more than 5 minutes from where we are staying. When led into the dining area by the hostess, the decor, the ambience of the room — immediately led me to suspect Artisan would offer an experience equal to any of our fine dining memories. We were surprised when we were lead to a table for two centered directly adjacent to the fireplace. We could not have been offered a more cozy table. I expected the service to be adequate. To our delight our server, Frank, added to expected timely presentation of appetizer and main course, a brief but appropriate “back story” recommendation, and specialized knowledge about several menu options. Frank was a skilled story teller, a veteran public school educator. When asked he described earning a masters degree in history. Frank mentioned that he no longer teaches. It was easy to see that he relishes his work waiting on tables, continuing to educate another kind of student.
The evening at Artisan was transcendent, the flavors achieved by the back of the house staff were exceptional, and making acquaintance with Frank was unforgettable.
