The Night…

The Night…

Saturday is bright and brisk.  Tomorrow is Easter Sunday.  I, a refugee from Christianity find the unreality of Easter, that is a certain opinion about the Easter story excruciating.  How so you naturally will ask…  The pageantry, the spectacle made of the resurrection story by Christian churches directs me to believe because a mutilated body, dead for three days, revives — the dark, bad, awful actual and potential of this life will be negated magically, unaccountably…  Who would not want to believe such !?

It is just not true, but a massively mistaken opinion.  The dead, none of the dead magically revivify.  Full stop.  Hiroshima, The Final Solution, the Nanjing Massacre, among countless other nightmares are just what they appear to have been.

Do not expect the Ukrainians on the eastern front feverishly preparing to be slammed by a Russian assault to entertain such an opinion for a millisecond.  Do not think that any of the personnel clearing un-exploded mines, cluster munitions left behind by the Russians in wrecked Ukrainian villages  — will think such superstitious opinion true.

Well then — what are we left with?  Are we all to drown in the darkness?

Resolved, this life such as it is, is up to us.  Things need not be as they have been.  There is no rescue from any of our train wrecks.  Indeed believing such a notion is reasonable, — contributes to the bloody pile-ups of the present and the past.  The gods are uninterested in us, and never have intervened to alleviate the consequences of immature, improvident actions.

It isn’t the irrationality of the Christian myth that repulses me.  It is a dead-end-irrationality, deceptive, unproductive.  Better to believe, irrationally, — that goodness can prevail, and that it is up to us.

It’s up to us.  Let us turn to face our demons.  Goodness is contagious.

Sure the night is lonely.  Better a true loneliness than a ersatz, ginned up, euphoria founded upon America, or conservative values, or _______________ .

Lonely Is The Night

By Billy Squier

Lonely is the night when you find yourself alone
Your demons come to light and your mind is not your own
Lonely is the night when there’s no one left to call
You feel the time is right–(say) the writin’s on the wall

It’s a high time to fight when the walls are closin’ in
Call it what you like–It’s time you got to win
Lonely, lonely, lonely–your spirit’s sinkin’ down
You find you’re not the only stranger in this town

Red lights, green lights, stop ‘n go jive
Headlines, deadlines jammin’ your mind
You been stealin’ shots from the side
Let your feelin’s go for a ride

There’s danger out tonight..the man is on the prowl
Get the dynamite…the boys are set to prowl
Lonely is the night when you hear the voices call
Are you ready for a fight–do you wanna take it all

Slowdown, showdown–waitin’ on line
Showtime, no time for changin’ your mind
Streets are ringin’, march to the sound
Let your secrets follow you down

Somebody’s watchin’ you baby–so much you can do
Nobody’s stoppin’ you baby, from makin’ it too
One glimpse’ll show you now baby, what the music can do
One kiss’ll show you now baby–it can happen to you

No more sleepin’, wastin’ our time
Midnight creepin’s first on our minds
No more lazin’ ’round the tv
You’ll go crazy–come out with me

When you’re lonely
Come out
Lonely is the night
Well you don’t have to be lonely
Come out
Lonely is the night
Lonely, lonely, lonely
Come out
Lonely is the night
