The Sublime

The Sublime

Life is not easy.  The luster of childhood can barely be remembered.  The idealism of youth has been replaced by disillusionment of Realpolitik.   Therefore to avoid the dark well of nihilism I seek beauty and meaning on a day-to-day basis.  The meaning of life depends in part upon me.   In part, a worthwhile life depends upon what, by good fortune/luck, one finds just lying around.

I stopped into the Long Grove Confectionary Co. candy store to speak with a friend who was rumored to be present there.  I’ve been inside the candy store before.  Yesterday looking around the sales floor I felt a sensation of delight,–as if seeing for the first time.  I offer for your appreciation images of the art of high-quality chocolate confections.  I purchased two of these white-chocolate covered marshmallows, with colored sprinkles to give as a gift to a co-worker.  I mentioned to him that one of these was for him, and the other was for Dorothy, his grand-daughter.  Chocolate reminds us of our childhood, that past season of joy and discovery which nevertheless still lives within the adult.

In years past I would have purchased two of each of the candy creations captured in these images.  At present, my diabetic condition dictates against that form of enjoyment.  But these photos show something of the visual delight that one can take of the forms, pattern, and tone of the fine work done by the chocolatiers of the Long Grove Confectionary Co.

Finally an image of the Long Grove Confectionary Co. kitchen, the creative space of Chef Brenden.  Some memorable soup flavors come out of this kitchen on Fridays.  Friday is soup day at the Long Grove Coffee Shop which is just next door to the chocolate store.

Maybe I’ll see you this Friday!?
