Paradox

Paradox

I awakened a few minutes ahead of the alarm.  Sometimes that happens.  That part of me which eludes words, wanted to be conscious, awake/alive…  Thus began my day.

On my way to Starbucks, I could sense that Friday will be warm, a return of comfortable weather, prior to the certain advent of frost, and eventually the wind propelled snow.  Let it come!  The challenge of seasonal change affords the friction, the requisite “traction” that the mind needs.  Let us enjoy the preparation, gathering fallen leaves, spreading of mulch to blanket vegetable beds for protection, for nourishment of a future spring-time planting…

On the short drive to Starbucks in downtown Geneva I traveled east on Fabyan Parkway.  This tune came up on the radio.  Gary Puckett is a vocalist, a performer of my generation.  I am lucky to have been present for several of his live performances.  This tune is a signature of the ecstasy and the paradox conveyed within Puckett’s music.  Life is not simple.  There’s the energy, sizzling, chaotic, seductive on the boundaries of the “reasonable” and lawful.  And of course there are the expectations, the constraints which life together in society must entail, “reason.”  And there are you and I, at the nexus of this seeming contradiction…
