About Luck

About Luck

Friday is supposed to be an unlucky day.

Was not Judas the thirteenth guest at the finale dinner party? Thursday evening was the time for that gala.

The next day, was anything but “good”. Never be beguiled by convention, a tagline foisted upon unsuspecting by a faceless, and self-interested priest-craft. Because it’s old does not make it true. “Good Friday” – a grotesque, tasteless phrase. Judicial murder was not out of the ordinary, still isn’t today. A patina of devotion does not alleviate a scintilla of the trauma, if you are in the crosshairs… What you saw is exactly what you got.

I digressed as I often do. Still I anticipate today will be felicitous. My Friday began around 1 am with ferocious thunder and lightning, waves of rainwater drumming against the side of the house. Awake, the thought occurred that maybe I ought to do something.  I positioned towels we’d stored just-in-case this would happen. The cotton towels absorbed the water which was driven around a window frame, perhaps through the foundation footings.

Water, what we call “nature” is not subject in any absolute manner to engineering, to any of our attempts to render ourselves, or our possessions untouchable. That said, circumstances allowed remedial measures, and no real lasting harm was incurred to the interior of the house.

I plan traveling to Union Grove Wisconsin later today. At Great Lakes Drag-a-Way men (and woman) test their machines, from a stand-still to finish line, 1,320 feet distant, in the quickest possible time. The ethos of a drag strip is loud, air laced by odor of fuel and rubber dust and palpable hot asphalt. Racing is by definition dangerous. Danger is the entire point! A crucible of sorts – what you have is tested. (Run-what-you-brung) Something not so obvious, the person-one-is will be brought to trial as well!

The car is staged, nothing more need be said, every eye waits the flash to green. In a millisecond of a trans-brake release, twin patches of rubber hook into the asphalt. What matters then is driver virtuosity, physics, and the smile of Lady Luck.

Well, I think it is time for a tune. This one by Rush, tells the truth. The Spirit of Radio.

One likes to believe in the freedom of music
But glittering prizes and endless compromises
Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah
Invisible airwaves crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle with the energy
Emotional feedback on a timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free
For the words of the profits were written on the studio wall
Concert hall
Echoes with the sounds of salesmen
Of salesman, of salesmen
