This morning I decided to sleep in, to get more rest.  Typically I arise at 6AM and am out the door 45 minutes later.  It is Saturday so why not “sleep in?”  The last hour or so of this morning’s rest were interrupted by troubled dreams. So much for getting more rest. I will not go into detail about the dreams.

After rising and having a bowl of cereal a thought came, crystalline in clarity.  In order to be an unambiguously happy adult –a happy childhood is required.  Such a blessed childhood is very rare, as extraordinarily wise parents and much good fortune are necessary.  Without the substrate of a happy childhood, one sorts through one’s past, the resources of one’s heritage, and works to build a meaningful adulthood from the bent and broken pieces.  Though I belong to that majority of children who neither had wise parents or lucky circumstances–I’ve been a fortunate adult.

I am fortunate that my wife is my best friend.  We have weathered storms together.  A few have been severe. We are together and enjoy one another’s company.

So I post this video from the Rolling Stones: Wild Horses.  It captures my mood.  As the plaintive, sad, beautiful chords, mediate the lyric, may I suggest that the “graceless lady” is life itself.  One can only look back with wonder upon the journey that one has taken, and marvel.  I suppose Odysseus must have thusly reflected upon reaching Ithaca after his long journey from Troy.  He was left standing though many of his compatriots were not as fortunate.
